Chapter Nineteen

For the next week, Paige was able to avoid Zoe as much as possible. When she wasn’t picking up extra shifts in the afternoons and evenings, she was looking for an apartment. Unfortunately the pickings were slim. She almost had enough saved for a deposit, but most places had monthly rents that were more than she wanted to spend or no available apartments for the next four months.

Friday night came around and Paige was looking forward to having the night off from apartment hunting. What she really wanted was to just go home and crash on the couch, even if Zoe was there, but Paige had already made different plans. Vanessa had texted her the night before asking if she wanted to come over for dinner and Paige had agreed since she still needed to work on the whole getting-over-Zoe thing. When Vanessa ended the text conversation with a smirking emoji, Paige knew she had other plans in mind aside from dinner.

Sex with Vanessa. It was definitely an appealing thought. Paige couldn’t deny that. After their first date, she’d thought maybe it would be a good idea to take things slowly and gradually try to get rid of her feelings for Zoe. But maybe what she really needed was a swift kick in the butt via sex with Vanessa. Looked like she would know if that was the answer by the end of the night.

As she walked out of her bedroom buttoning up her shirt, Zoe exited her room. Paige stuttered to a stop, hand pressed to her chest at the surprise. “Oh, hey. What’s up?”

“I’m heading out to meet Jake at his company party. I guess Ian and a couple others are getting promotions. The last thing I want to do is celebrate Ian,” she said. “I was hoping we could watch some more Ted Lasso. It’s been a while.” Zoe’s voice lowered and Paige saw the hint of sadness in her eyes.

It had been a while, but Paige needed to try and protect her heart. She was afraid of what would happen if she didn’t. Paige cleared her throat as she noticed Zoe’s low-cut black dress. So beautiful. Paige didn’t acknowledge why she’d been so absent lately. “Sorry to say, even if you didn’t have plans, I do. Um, I have another date with Vanessa.”

“Oh.” Zoe played with one of her earrings. “Um, what are you two doing?”

“I’m going to her place for dinner.”

Zoe clenched her jaw and her expression seemed to completely shut down. “Well I hope you have a good time. I’ll see you later.”

She walked away before Paige could reply. Instead, Paige let out a breath and did a final check of herself in the bathroom mirror. She ran a hand over a few flyaway strands on the right side and then flattened her collar where it was bent up near the back before deeming herself presentable enough.

She quickly grabbed her keys and was on her way to Vanessa’s apartment, focusing on her drive instead of the fact that Zoe was having her own date night with Jake.
